The processing dates that matter right now
As of 13 July 2026, DETE is working through Critical Skills Employment Permit applications submitted up to 25 June 2026. That is a genuinely fast turnaround, just under three weeks, and it confirms Critical Skills permits remain the priority lane for anyone applying to work in Ireland.
New General Employment Permit applications are moving slower. DETE is currently processing applications from 2 June 2026, meaning a wait of roughly six weeks for that category. New Intra-Company Transfer applications sit close behind at 8 June 2026, while all other new applications (excluding Critical Skills, GEPs and ICTs) are being processed from 3 June 2026.
The real gap shows up in renewals. Renewal applications across all renewable permit types are only being processed up to 2 April 2026, and ICT renewals specifically up to 3 April 2026. That is a three and a half month backlog compared to new Critical Skills applications. If your permit is up for renewal, do not wait until the last minute to submit.
Why the gap between new and renewal applications matters
This split tells you something important about how DETE is allocating resources. New Critical Skills and General Employment Permit applications are getting processed within weeks, but people already working in Ireland who need to renew their status are facing a much longer wait relative to submission date.
If you are on a permit expiring in the next few months, this gap means you should submit your renewal as early as the rules allow, generally up to 12 weeks before expiry. Given the current 2 April 2026 processing date for renewals, anyone who submitted in early April is already inside a queue that is taking months to clear.
Reviews and appeals are moving slowest of all, with DETE currently working through cases from 29 December 2025. If you have had a permit refused and are appealing, expect a wait measured in months rather than weeks.
Permit volumes are up 12% year over year, but fewer companies are sponsoring
2026 has seen 34,686 permits issued so far across 5,699 companies, a 12% increase on the 31,044 permits issued in 2025. That growth suggests continued strong demand for overseas talent despite the processing delays on the renewal side.
What is more interesting is the drop in the number of sponsoring companies. In 2025, 8,324 companies were involved in permit applications. In 2026 that number has fallen to 5,699, even as overall permit volume rose. Compare that to 2024, when 39,390 permits were spread across 8,031 companies.
The pattern points to consolidation. Fewer companies are sponsoring permits, but the ones that are sponsoring are doing so in higher volume. If you are job hunting, this means it pays to focus your search on large, established sponsors rather than casting a wide net across smaller employers who may not be renewing their sponsor status this year.
Who is actually hiring right now
Looking at companies with permit data updated in the last 30 days, the biggest names are exactly who you would expect: Google Ireland Limited appears multiple times with permit batches of 734, 401 and 368, Ernst & Young shows up with 714 and 365, and Amazon Development Centre Ireland Limited has entries of 596 and 387.
Healthcare and meat processing are also showing strong, consistent sponsor activity. Dawn Meats Ireland UC has two recent entries of 669 and 663 permits, Redwood Extended Care Facility UC shows 460 and 353, University Hospital Limerick has 440, Mowlam Healthcare Services has 399, and Nua Healthcare Services has 383. Rosderra Irish Meats Group UC adds another 376.
This tells a clear story: tech giants, professional services firms like Deloitte (374) and Accenture (397), and healthcare and food production employers are the most active sponsors right now. If you are applying for a Critical Skills or General Employment Permit, these sectors are where the volume is.
What this means for your application strategy
If you are applying fresh for a Critical Skills Employment Permit, the current processing speed of under three weeks is about as good as it gets. Get your documentation right the first time, since a fast processing queue does not help if your application gets kicked back for errors.
If you already hold a permit and need to renew, treat the 2 April 2026 processing date as a warning sign. Submit as early as your permit conditions allow and build in buffer time before your current permit expires, because the renewal queue is running months behind the new application queue.
Finally, target your job search toward the companies actually sponsoring at volume. Google, Ernst & Young, Amazon, Deloitte and Accenture are visible in the tech and professional services space, while Dawn Meats, Redwood, Nua Healthcare, Mowlam and University Hospital Limerick show that healthcare and meat processing remain steady, high-volume sponsors outside the usual tech headlines.
